Abstract: The first step in the reprocessing of HTGR fuel elements is the separation of the fuel element-graphite from the heavy metals. Several physical and chemical separation methods are presented in this report and investigated as to their suitability. If the processing aspects especially under their nuclear conditions are compared the fluidized-bed-burning is the best technical separation procedure. Since complete emission of the isotop C-14 with the offgas from an industrial plant will probably not be tolerated methods of its retention are discussed. Various fuel systems and their effects on the processing technique are presented and HEAD-END facilities, already inoperation or still in the planning stage, are described.
